The first version of my Beer App in now live. If you clickity-click the “BEER APP” tab at the top of the page, you will see the “Simple Search” interface. Simple search allows you to search the database by beer name; nothing more.
If that is not good enough for you, navigate on down to the “Advanced Search” link and give it a little tap. Shazam! You are now staring at a much more robust interface. In addition to beer name; brewery name, ABV%, IBUs, style, sub-style, availability and serving type are all options. I am also in the process of adding detail filters. Currently, you can filter for organic, bottle conditioned, barrel aged and blended ales. I want to thank my friend Jesse for his help with the SQL statements. They are what make all the voodoo happen behind the magic curtain.
In the near future, I’ll be adding the ability to search by city, state/province and country. I will also be brushing up on my java script, so I can make sub-styles dynamic. Right now, there is just a list of all sub-styles. Once dynamic, you will only see sub-styles for the main style you have chosen. Neat, right?
So, now it’s time for a little tete-a-tete; just you and me. I am but one man. I can’t be expected to catalog a world of beer by myself. I am going to need your help. Right now I am holdup in a cave, deep in the mountains (or my house in the suburbs, I get the two confused) working diligently on getting my Beer App ready for user submitted content. Soon, I will be turning my Beer App over to you. Proletarier aller Länder, vereinigt euch!
While user content is still a little ways off, there is another way you can help right now. Beer App isn’t a very impressive name; it needs sexed up. So far, my friend Josh has come up with Face Beer. I welcome you to post your suggestions. If enough come in, I will turn it over to a community vote.
Future improvement also include a ranking system and a mapping function. I will talk more about these features as the project progresses.
Cheers!
Kevin
I say call it Tiffany. She’s had more beer in her than you’ll ever have in your silly database.
It would appear that in order to use your search I have to, by some remarkable coincidence, be searching for one of your 148 beers. Out of roughly 7 trillion varieties.
It looks like there is a typo in the advanced search link. It should link to http://beerandcoding.com/beer-app/?search_type=1 but the link currently has the 1 in single quotes. It defaults to the basic search if it can’t understand the search type.
Hmm, I’ll give you the automatic programmer response. It works fine on my computer. Maybe it is a browser issue. I’m still running Firefox 2 and IE 7.
I removed the quotes and it appears to still work fine. Let me know if it still isn’t working for you.
Cheers!
Kevin
That did the trick.
