A while back, I wrote a post about a contest to create the name and logo for Hop Valley’s first bottled beer; a Cream Ale celebrating Springfield’s 125th anniversary. If anyone is still interested in entering, the contest is open through 5:00pm tonight. You can enter, or view current entries on Hop Valley’s Facebook Page.
When I checked out their page last night, it looked like they had only received two entries. This prompted me to come up with a logo of my own and enter the contest. The contest rules stated that entries were to use either the name of Springfield’s founder, Elias Briggs, or the drift boat (a Springfield invention) in their title and design.
I picked the name Mill Race Cream Ale for my entry. While it doesn’t reference Elias directly, he is the man that trenched Springfield’s mill race by plow and ox in 1852. For the logo, I started with a period photo of a Springfield mill. After a little Gimp magic, I came up with the relief print below.

My entry hasn’t appeared on Hop Valley’s page yet; it is currently pending approval by the contest supervisor. They haven’t announced how the judging will take place, but I did notice that I can thumbs up, or thumbs down the other approved entries. If it turns out that the judging is open to the public, I will let you know so you can help choose the name/logo for Hop Valley’s beer.
Cheers!
Kevin
(Update: The contest is now in the judging phase. It appears that the brewery is doing the judging. Looks like I won’t be pandering for votes.)
